Information for Internationally Trained Accountants

The Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) and Chartered Accountant (CA) designations may only be used in the Province of Ontario by Members of the Chartered Professional Accountants of Ontario (CPA Ontario).

Find more information on the right to practise public accounting in the Province of Ontario. If you are not a member of an accounting body but have a university degree from an academic institution outside Canada you may be eligible to register based on your degree

If you are an accountant who is a member of a professional body outside of Canada, your path to the CPA designation is guided by a Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA). MRAs are signed with accounting bodies that have substantially equivalent qualification programs. Eligible individuals applying to register with CPA Ontario from an accounting body with which an MRA has been signed don’t have to complete the full qualification requirement that normally applies to anyone seeking to become a member of CPA Ontario.

Although CPA Ontario is unifying CAs, CGAs, CMAs and as one single, strong profession under the banner of Chartered Professional Accountants, the admission requirements for internationally trained accountants are still set out by each accounting body.

Members of professional accounting bodies outside of Canada who seek admission to membership in CPA Ontario should review the list of MRAs signed with each legacy body below:

MRAs signed with The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario (please see Schedules A, B and C on pages 11-13). To learn about individual accounting bodies' MRAs, select them from the list at the bottom of the page.

MRAs signed with the Certified Management Accountants of Ontario.

MRAs signed with the Certified General Accountants of Ontario.

If your accounting body is not found on any of the lists above, you may still be eligible for advanced standing. To find out how to become a CPA in Ontario, please visit "CPA Ontario Internationally Trained Accountants
