Introduction

The Advanced Certificate in Accounting and Finance (ACAF) program is designed to build on your knowledge base to further develop technical and workplace skills.

The ACAF program is made up of 11 courses: six technical courses and five applied courses. Each course has six to eight weeks of study, followed by a study week and an in-person final examination with the exception of Accounting Software Application, which requires the completion of an entirely self-paced learning component and an online final exam.

Technical course exemptions are available to those who demonstrate completion of equivalent courses at a Post-Secondary Institution (PSI). Applied courses are available exclusively through CPA Ontario. Visit the ACAF Course Schedule to see our current offerings.

Course Length
All ACAF applied courses are eight weeks of study, followed by a study week, and a three-hour, in-person final exam, except for:

  • Ethics and Workplace Skills which is a six-week course followed by a three hour exam.
  • Accounting Software Applications which is a 10-hour self-study online pass or fail course.

Delivery
All Applied ACAF courses are delivered online. All Technical ACAF courses are delivered via online and in-class lecture options (based on sufficient enrollment), with the exception of Information Technology which is delivered online only.  Enrollees are given access to a subject-matter expert who will answer questions and provide coaching and guidance, if needed. Examinations are held in person and offered across Ontario. Check the ACAF Enrolment Guide for more information.

Expected time commitment
ACAF entry and technical course requirements taken through the CPA profession typically require 15-20 hours of effort per week over eight weeks, or through an equivalent course at a PSI, typically, over 13 weeks with lecture and self-study time.

The applied ACAF courses typically require 10-12 hours of effort per week over 10 weeks with the exception of Ethics and Workplace Skills, which takes eight weeks, and Accounting Software Application, which is self-paced and requires a total of 10 hours of study time.

Assessment
Each course is assessed through a combination of quizzes and assignments worth a maximum of 30 per cent, and a final exam worth 70 per cent of the final course grade with the exception of Accounting Software Application.
